What to Watch this December

Studios are dropping new releases left and right just in time for the Christmas season. Keep reading to see what new movies are coming out, and what classic Christmas movies you should watch again!

New Releases!

Ranging from video games to history dramas, and childhood nostalgia to civil rights, December brings about many highly-anticipated new releases.

  1. PlayStation Classic (December 3) — Mimicking the original 1994 PlayStation console, it features original games too, such as Final Fantasy VII and TEKKEN 3!

  2. Mary, Queen of Scots (December 7) — The much anticipated movie about the feud between Mary, Queen of Scots and Queen Elizabeth I of England features Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie.

  3. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (December 7) — Not sure what to wish for for Christmas? Nintendo is bringing the crossover of crossovers just in time!

  1. Spider-man: Into the Spider-verse (December 14) — This animated movie follows Miles Morales, a teen who develops powers after being bitten by a radioactive spider. He meets Peter Parker and many others who share the same powers. 

  2. Mary Poppins Returns (December 19): Emily Blunt stars as the new Mary Poppins, coming back into Michael’s life to help his kids discover the joys of their childhood.

  3. Aquaman (December 21): Jason Momoa joins the DC Extended Universe as Arthur Curry, better known as Aquaman, who is caught between a war between the surface world and the Atlanteans of the sea.

  4. Bumblebee (December 21): Charlie Watson (Hailee Steinfeld) finds and befriends Bumblee from a small California junkyard, and have to run from the government, lead by Agent Burns (John Cena).

  5. On the Basis of Sex (December 25): Based on a true story, the movie follows Ruth, a young Harvard educated lawyer and mother, who teams up with her husband to work on a case of gender discrimination.

Getting into the Christmas Spirit…

Along with exam season comes Christmas season — watch a movie during your study break, and let the holiday spirit cheer you up!

  1. It’s a Wonderful Life — This Christmas classic is sure to remind you the importance of good will and optimism amidst the stress and hopelessness in today’s world.

  2. A Charlie Brown Christmas — Charlie rediscovers the true meaning of Christmas with the help of his friends, Snoopy, and a teeny Christmas tree.

  3. Love Actually — The 2003 rom-com takes you on several roller coasters of love; follow the very different couples as they struggle to figure out their love lives during the hectic month before Christmas.

  4. Princess Switch — Vanessa Hudgens stars as both the duchess and her lookalike who switch places a week before Christmas, and end up falling for people in the other person’s life.

  5. Home Alone Series — Follow the classic childhood icon, Kevin McCallister, on his adventures home alone this Christmas. If one movie doesn’t cut it, don’t worry, there’s five!

  6. Die Hard — Nothing interrupts Christmas festivities like a group of terrorists in an office Christmas party; sure, this may not be a traditional Christmas movie, but it’s surely an interesting one!
